Whether home or hospital birth, rarely does someone go into labor expecting a Cesarean section (C-section), but about one-third of births end up this way. In 2022, about 32.1% of live births in the U.S. were C-sections, a significant statistic to digest. So, what’s going on? Why do so many births end this way? It’s complicated. C-sections can save lives, but there’s also an ongoing conversation about how often they’re necessary.

Within seconds, the floor and our doctor were covered in blood and there were about 20 people, including 6 physicians in our room.  They had only minutes to try to get my uterus back into place and hold or else I’d be rushed to the OR for an emergency hysterectomy.
