I’m still glowing over this amazing mama! She normally has her babies so quickly we can hardly get to her in time, but it was a true pleasure to be there a few hours before baby arrived so that I could document how she labors with such grace, calm, and strength, surrounded by her family and her birth team. Also she had enough time to get into the tub to finally have the water birth she wanted! If every birth could be like this!! 😍😍😍

I’m taking a photography class to learn about li

I’m taking a photography class to learn about light and how to use it to bring more magic and emotions to my photos. In birth you have very little control. You can’t move people and sometimes can’t adjust light. So I was unsure how the class would apply to my birth work.

But recently I was at the make lovely birth, and I was able to make small adjustments to the curtains to create magical light. I found rim light, flare, waited for people to move into pockets of light, to move into the edge of light/shadow...

And I realized the thing I most often have control of is looking for these lighting scenarios and adjusting my position made all the difference in the world.

I’m so excited to see immediate improvements in my work from this class!

I struggle to find the words to accurately describe how amazing this woman is, how gracefully she moved through labor, how wonderful her birth team was, how she worked through different positions and mental blocks to get her baby into the world. I hope these photos can reveal a tiny glimpse of the magic of this day.

When I saw the literal rays of light beaming through the sky at sunrise, I had to stop this family in their tracks as they got out of their car and say, « Your photoshoot starts right here, right now, in the parking lot. This light is too cool to not capture! »

And the thing about light is it changes in a moment. You have to pay attention. You have to be present. You have to train your eyes to notice. Three minutes later those beams of light were gone and this picture would not have been made.

I’m taking @summer_murdock ‘s class on the magic of light and I can’t wait to see the inspiration and new images that come from it!
